MedStar Georgetown Distinguished Achievement Award in Diabetic Limb Salvage

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is honored to present Arun Bal, MBBS, MS, PhD with the 2019 MedStar Georgetown Distinguished Achievement Award in Diabetic Limb Salvage.


For almost  three decades, Dr. Bal has successfully treated patients with diabetic foot complications in India. From developing special footwear to specific surgical techniques, he has revolutionized the treatment of foot ulcers, charcot foot, and various problems related to the diabetic foot. Dr. Bal is responsible for local development of measuring equipment like Semmes Weinstein Monofilament, Sensitometers for Vibration Perception and Heat and Cold Threshold measurement and toe pressure measurement to evaluate diabetic neuropathy and vascular status with active industry interaction. Dr. Bal is credited with starting specialized Diabetic Foot Surgery courses for surgeons and paramedics for the first time in India in 2003.  Many of his students are successfully treating diabetic foot problems in many parts of India and other Gulf countries. Dr. Bal is the founding member and current President of Diabetic Foot Society of India, the founding member of the Forum for Medical Ethics in India and past editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics. He completed his Doctorate in Political Science on “Healthcare as a Human Right” and is dedicated to developing ethical standards in medical practices for patients.  Please join us in applauding Dr. Bal for his great work toward meaningful patient care and pioneering education in a setting with limited resources.
